Assemblywoman Janele Hyer-Spencer (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn) is pleased to announce that she has secured $4 million in the state’s 2008 fiscal budget for the expansion of a new community center by the Staten Island Community Center, Inc., (SICC) a non-profit community organization whose mission is to provide cultural, educational, and social programs to all residents of Staten Island. The SICC, currently located at the intersection of Hylan Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue, organizes events open to the community from plays to artistic performances. The proposed facility will provide increased services for the children, adult and senior populations on the island.
The center was created and founded by native Staten Islanders who wanted to help serve the needs of their vast and growing community. The SICC specializes in childcare and is licensed by the New York City Bureau of Day Care. They are a provider of free Universal Pre-K and employ New York City certified teachers. They have special music, dance and art programs available to children of all ages such as piano, violin and guitar lessons; classical ballet; modern dance; ballroom dancing; drawing and painting. Their after school program provides assistance with homework as well as tutoring in Math, English and Russian. The SICC runs a sports activity program as well as a day a camp in the summer.
Because of space constraints, the SICC cannot currently accept all those that apply to these programs. The expansion of this new community center will provide the ever-increasing population on Staten Island with a facility that will meet the challenge of the lifestyle and pace of today’s working parents and partner in the care and nurturing of a child’s body, mind and spirit.
Assemblywoman Janele Hyer-Spencer is proud to partner with the SICC in increasing community services for our children, adults, and senior citizens, including the Russian speaking community.
